Clinical Rotations
Nursing Students in Action
Clinical experience is one of the key components of Highline’s nursing program. Students apply theory learned in the classroom to practice in various clinical settings and graduate with many hours of “hands-on” experience.
Settings for these “clinical practicum” experiences are spread throughout the North and South Sound region, offering students the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in areas involving many populations across the lifespan, at inpatient acute (maternal-newborn, medical-surgical, psychiatric, pediatric, emergency, and critical care, etc.); inpatient restorative or long-term (rehabilitation, skilled nursing, assisted living, etc.); outpatient (clinic, urgent care, and same-day surgery, etc.); and community (home health, hospice, support groups, early childhood education, etc.) facilities or agencies.
Clinical rotations are 8-12 hour shifts once or twice a week for 3-8 weeks, depending on the level. They may be day or evening shifts. For example, the 6th level practicum is 144-160 hours over 4 weeks and may be days, nights or evenings with 8-12 hour shifts.
Training Sites will accept placement of only those students who are insured against malpractice liability for actions or inactions occurring in the clinical setting. Students participating in the clinical education program will be covered by a student medical malpractice policy offered through the College and paid through your student fees. The limits of such coverage shall be, at a minimum, $1,000,000 per occurrence. Certificates of such coverage purchased by the student will be provided to Training Site upon request.
