Nursing Program Mission Statement (Proposed):

The Highline College nursing program is committed to preparing competent novice practitioners who utilize effective communication, critical thinking, and clinical judgement to provide holistic, inclusive care for diverse communities. Our graduates will demonstrate respect, compassion, and cultural humility, therefore adhering to legal and ethical standards in their scope of practice.

Nursing Program Vision Statement (Proposed):

The Highline College Nursing Program embraces the advancement of equity, diversity, and inclusion for all students, faculty, and staff. We recognize and respect the inherent dignity, worth, and uniqueness of all people in our program to protect, promote, and optimize the health and abilities of all people in our communities. To achieve this vision, we continuously evaluate and implement processes for admitting, hiring, retaining, and supporting diverse and underrepresented students, staff, and faculty. As a nursing program we accept the responsibility to foster and graduate multiculturally sensitive nurses who mirror the diverse communities they serve.

Nursing Program Values & Philosophy (Proposed):

  • Access: Registered nurses acknowledge individual health outcomes influence the health and productivity of the community. By identifying and responding to determinants of health, the registered nurse strives for the elimination of disparities in health and the provision of healthcare.
  • Collaboration: The nurse-client relationship is a therapeutic alliance based on communication, concern, and respect. In the social environment of peers and educators, nursing students collaboratively construct meaningful knowledge, leading to cognitive, behavioral, and affective changes.
  • Cultural Responsiveness & Equity: As a leader on the healthcare team, the registered nurse’s role is to provide and coordinate holistic and inclusive care; educate clients, families, and others; and advocate for diverse communities.
  • Excellence: Nursing faculty share current and historical knowledge, clinical expertise, and a passion for nursing with students expecting and encouraging curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm in return. Registered nurses utilize the nursing process as the framework for application of evidence-based knowledge, critical decision-making, competent intervention, and comprehensive evaluation in health promotion, illness prevention, and health management across the lifespan.
  • Integrity & Transparency: Registered nurses are dedicated to maintaining currency in their practice as well as adhering to rigorous legal and ethical standards.
  • Partnership with local and global communities: Nursing faculty share a vision that the practice of nursing makes a difference in our world. Professional nursing is a dynamic and interactive process that views the client, family, and community holistically.
  • Student Centered Learning: Nursing practice fosters life-long learning through continuing education and critical inquiry. Registered nurses integrate the art of caring with scientific knowledge to promote the safety and well-being of the client, family, and community.
